The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)

A huge spaceship lands in Washington, D.C. bringing with it a space traveler (Michael Rennie) and a huge robotic companion with the ability to vaporize people.  The traveler poses as a human and rents a room in a house while he attempts to contact someone he can warn about Earth’s future. Directed by Robert Wise, this acclaimed sci-fi classic co-stars Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe, Billy Gray and Sam Jaffe.
