Memories from Morocco and Beyond. In this collection of her memories, which spans from the 1930s through 2001, Nelly shares her experiences during historic events as well as, often amusing, everyday moments from her idyllic childhood in Casablanca, her later life in England, and her travel adventures. Nelly Chinn grew up in Casablanca, Morocco in a society where the magic of the Arabian Nights co-existed with the rationality of the western world. Within her family French, Spanish, Moroccan Arabic and English were all spoken. She survived German/Vichy French occupation during World War II to become, in later years, knighted by the French government. After the war, she married her knight in shining armor, Harry Chinn, an unpredictable and irrepressible Liverpudlian whom she met while he was serving in the RAF. They lived in England, then Casablanca, then America. Nelly wrote her memoirs over many years, to leave a taste of her life to her grandchildren. In 2021, when Nelly was 93, her daughter, Norma Shepperd, helped her curate and publish her stories. Nelly passed away in February 2023. <Back to top of page> |
